I’ve been to the Acropolis,
I sat on the old stones.

Leonard Cohen.

I began the day with a visit to the Acropolis. This is a fun and, at times, challenging side trip.

The track beings by wending up the creek valley, climbing slowly, before beginning up an ascent to the east. The climb gets progressively steeper before suddenly leaving the forest at the top.

Here the track turns north, along a ridge leading to the Acropolis, which now dominates the view. The track climbs and sidles the imposing bulk of the landform before scrambling up towards the summit.

Climbing the Acropolis

On the summit the clouds were setting in, so my views were limited. But the outline of the monolith on the ascent and descent, as it ghosted through the clouds, was mesmerising and somewhat unsettling.

As I descended I passed another group who had begun the ascent, and who kindly took my photo.

Back at the hut I loaded up my pack and began the return journey to the Overland Track.

A general comment about the Overland Track is the abundance and variety of local wildlife (although bumblebees are feral).

Upon rejoining the Overland Track I headed south towards Narcissus Hut on the northern bank of Lake St Clair. The track is flat and mostly boardwalked and the walking was pleasant with Mt Olympus getting larger in my view as I continued, and the distinctive cone of Mt Byron proving a punctuation to the landform.

I continued past Narcissus Hut to Echo Point, where I re-met my friends. I camped on the shore of the lake a short distance from the hut for a bit of peace and quiet as the hut was a popular place that night.
